A broken laptop hinge is one of the most common repairs we carry out. It can look alarming — the screen wobbles when you type, plastic is cracking around the hinge area, or the lid won't stay open properly. The good news: in most cases it's fully fixable, and it doesn't necessarily mean the laptop is dead.
Why do laptop hinges break?
Hinges are designed for roughly 10,000–20,000 open/close cycles — more than enough for most laptops if treated carefully. The most common causes of early failure are:
- →Picking up or carrying the laptop by the screen (strains the hinge from one side)
- →Forcing the lid open past its natural range
- →Hinge design weakness — common in budget models from Acer, Lenovo, and some HP lines
- →Accumulated wear over 3–5 years of daily use
- →Accidental drops or impacts to the corner
Signs that need immediate attention
- →Screen wobbles when you type, even gently
- →Cracking or popping sound when opening or closing
- →Plastic bezel around the screen is splitting near the hinge
- →A gap appearing between the screen panel and the chassis
- →Hinge stiff on one side but loose on the other
Can it be repaired, or do you need a new laptop?
In most cases, yes — it can be repaired. The key question we assess is whether the damage is limited to the hinge itself, or whether the surrounding plastic housing (the lid frame) has also cracked or warped. A hinge-only replacement is typically RM 120–200. If the housing needs replacing too, the cost increases, but it's still almost always cheaper than a new laptop.

What happens if you leave a broken hinge?
Leaving it can make things worse. The display cable runs through the hinge — ongoing mechanical stress from a broken hinge can eventually fray or tear the cable, causing screen flickering or a completely dead screen. A RM 150 hinge repair can become a RM 350 hinge + display cable repair if left too long.
