Ransomware, AI-powered phishing, and credential-stealing malware are more sophisticated than ever in 2026. We configure and install antivirus software for dozens of Fix It Sukil customers every month — from home users to small businesses. Here's our honest take on the two products we recommend most.
Do you even need paid antivirus?
Windows Defender (built-in and free) has improved a lot and scores well in independent lab tests. For basic home use with careful browsing habits, it's adequate. But paid products add meaningful extras that Defender lacks: real-time phishing protection, ransomware rollback, webcam/microphone shields, multi-device licences, and identity monitoring.
Kaspersky — best detection rates
Kaspersky consistently tops detection rate tests from AV-TEST and AV-Comparatives — often achieving 99.9%+ in malware detection. It catches threats before they execute, has excellent web protection, and the interface is clean and non-intrusive. It's our #1 recommendation for most users.
- →Best-in-class malware detection rates globally
- →Lightweight — minimal impact on laptop performance
- →Includes real-time web protection and phishing alerts
- →Standard (1 PC) is great value; Plus covers 3 devices
- →Ideal for newer laptops with sufficient RAM (8GB+)
Avast — great free tier, solid paid option
Avast Free is one of the most capable free antivirus products available. The paid upgrade (Avast Premium Security) adds ransomware protection, a webcam shield, and a software updater that keeps third-party apps patched — a meaningful security layer many people overlook.
- →Free tier is genuinely useful (unlike many 'free' products)
- →Slightly lighter on system resources than Kaspersky — better for older laptops
- →Good web and email protection
- →Premium adds ransomware shield and software vulnerability scanning
- →Interface can be cluttered with upsell prompts on the free version
Our recommendation by use case
- →New laptop or 8GB+ RAM: Kaspersky Standard — maximum protection, no noticeable performance impact
- →Older laptop (4+ years, 4GB RAM): Avast Free or Premium — more resource-efficient
- →Home with 2–3 devices: Kaspersky Plus (3 devices) — best value per device
- →Tight budget: Avast Free Antivirus — genuinely good and costs nothing
- →Small business PCs: Kaspersky Standard, applied consistently across all machines
What about McAfee and Norton?
Both are legitimate products, but they tend to be heavier on system resources and more aggressive with upsell notifications. We generally recommend Kaspersky or Avast over these for Malaysian users — better performance-to-protection ratio at similar price points.
💡 We always remove conflicting security software before installing a new product. Running two antivirus programs simultaneously causes performance issues and conflicts — more is not better.
