Your laptop isn't dying — it probably just needs one of these fixes. A slow laptop is one of the most common complaints we hear at Fix It Sukil. The good news: most causes are fixable without buying a new machine. Here's a breakdown of every common culprit and what to do about each.
1. Your Storage Drive Is Nearly Full
When your drive exceeds 85% capacity, Windows runs out of space for temporary files and virtual memory. The system slows to a crawl as it constantly scrambles for room. This is one of the most common — and most overlooked — reasons for a sluggish laptop.
- →Open File Explorer → right-click your C: drive → Properties to check usage
- →Run Windows Disk Cleanup (search it in Start) to clear temporary files
- →Empty the Recycle Bin and uninstall apps you no longer use
- →Move large files (videos, photos, old downloads) to an external drive
💡 Long-term fix: upgrade to a larger SSD. A 512GB SSD costs around RM125–149 installed and fixes the problem permanently. We handle the full migration — your Windows, apps, and files move over intact.
2. You're Still Running a Hard Disk Drive (HDD)
If your laptop is 3–4+ years old and was bought at a budget price, it almost certainly came with a mechanical HDD. These are slow by design — spinning magnetic disks can't keep up with modern Windows and app demands. This single component is responsible for the majority of "my laptop has gotten so slow" cases we see.
- →HDD boot time: 30–60 seconds. SSD boot time: 8–12 seconds
- →HDD app launch (Chrome): 8–15 seconds. SSD: under 2 seconds
- →An SSD upgrade is the single highest-impact upgrade you can do
- →We migrate your entire Windows installation — no reinstall, no data loss

3. Too Many Startup Programs
Every app that loads at startup eats into your RAM and CPU before you've even opened a browser tab. Teams, Spotify, OneDrive, Discord, antivirus software, and manufacturer bloatware are common offenders. A laptop with 20 startup items can take twice as long to become usable as one with 5.
- →Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
- →Click the Startup tab (or Startup Apps in Windows 11)
- →Right-click anything with High startup impact → Disable
- →Safe to disable: Spotify, Teams, Discord, OneDrive, Skype, manufacturer updaters
- →Do NOT disable: antivirus, audio drivers, display drivers
4. Not Enough RAM
Chrome alone uses 1–3GB of RAM depending on how many tabs you have open. If your laptop has only 4GB total, the system starts using your slow hard disk as "overflow" RAM (called paging) — and that's when everything crawls. 8GB is the comfortable minimum for everyday use in 2026; 16GB if you run multiple apps simultaneously.
- →Check current RAM: right-click Start → System → Device Specifications
- →4GB RAM with Chrome + Teams + anything else = guaranteed slowness
- →8GB upgrade: approximately RM89 installed (most laptops support it)
- →16GB: ideal for multitasking, editing, or running virtual machines
5. Overheating and Thermal Throttling
Malaysia's climate doesn't help. When a laptop's CPU temperature exceeds its limit (usually 95–100°C), it automatically slows itself down to avoid damage — this is called thermal throttling. The result: your laptop gets progressively slower the longer you use it, especially under load.
- →Signs: fan runs constantly, laptop feels very hot on the bottom, slowdown worsens over time
- →Cause: dried-out thermal paste (common after 2–3 years) or dust-clogged vents
- →Fix: professional thermal paste replacement + internal cleaning drops temps by 15–25°C
- →Result: faster sustained performance, quieter fan, longer lifespan
We offer a laptop cleaning and thermal paste service — one of the most effective tune-ups for older laptops.
6. Malware and Background Processes
Viruses and adware often run silently in the background, consuming CPU cycles and internet bandwidth without any obvious symptoms except a slow machine. If your laptop slowed down suddenly (not gradually), malware is a likely cause.
- →Open Task Manager → Processes tab → sort by CPU or Memory
- →Look for unknown processes using high resources
- →Run a full scan with Windows Defender (free, built-in)
- →For stubborn infections: Malwarebytes Free is excellent for a second opinion
- →Persistent or recurring infections: bring it in — some malware requires offline removal
7. Windows Is Outdated
Outdated Windows versions miss driver updates, security patches, and performance improvements. Some slowdowns — particularly with battery management and graphics — are fixed in routine Windows updates that many people never install.
- →Go to Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates
- →Install all available updates including optional ones
- →Restart fully (not sleep/hibernate) after updates complete
- →If you're on Windows 10 and eligible for Windows 11, consider upgrading — it's faster on modern hardware
When to See a Professional
If you've worked through the list above and the laptop is still slow, the issue is likely hardware-level: a failing storage drive, degraded RAM, or severe thermal damage. These require proper diagnosis before you spend money on the wrong fix.
